Hello all,
I discussed this idea with those at the club the past two weeks. I want to run a rules-lite 4 week ancients campaign for the club.
- Loosely based on the Conan/Hyborian Age map - Use the Hail Caesar rules - Players are welcome to choose any army from the Hail Caesar army list books, probably 350pts max size.
On a given Sunday, battles are fought and victory points earned. Then we will do a short campaign map section to organise who fights who the following week.
Ideally, the first map section would be next Sunday (30th January), organising the first battles which would be fought two weeks later (as both Don and I are off the immediate week after).
Dates:
[30th Jan]- Campaign Turn 1 (no battles) 13th Feb - First battles, Campaign Turn 2 20th Feb - Second battles, Campaign Turn 3 27th Feb - Third battles, Campaign Turn 4 6the Feb - Fourth battles. End
So far we have Don (Seleucids), Alex (Crusaders), David (unsure maybe Gauls), Ken (Greeks), Brian (Romans). Any and all welcome. The campaign can grow to fit all but it does mean not everyone needs to fight everyone else.

That's totally fine Dave
I got one of my dates wrong, should say 6th March.
Also while I'm looking at Hail Caesar, I've also enjoyed Too the Strongest. It's a good grid based game tried at the club before. I'll have a good think and make a choice. I'm open to bribery and extortion.

What's the scale, any chance I can borrow an army off someone?

It will be 28mm and I imagine that should be no problem at all. I think there are enough ancients armies to run 16 campaigns at the same time. If I play I would be borrowing one too.
While army choice is needed for next sunday, full army lists isn't needed until the first battle week in 3 weeks time.

No worries Bob. I might join the campaign too to make the numbers even. You can always fight my battles when you are free and I'll do the rest.

So looking at the rules, stardard unit size is 16-20 figures, so would that be 4-5 bases of 4 figures in 2 lines of 2 for infantry? Cavalry unit at 12-16 figures, so 3-4 bases of 2x2 figures for a unit?
Just seeing if I can base up some archers and maybe pull some knights together for one of the early medieval army lists.

The armies we have are based for so many different systems that I wouldnt worry too much. As long as they roughly fit the hail caesar size that will do I'm sure.
Figures per base dont matter as it's the full unit base size that does, so you can spread yours out if you need to.

How would you feel about first battles being played 6th, 13th and/or 20th Feb, I'm hoping to be up in Glasgow on 13th but would still like to get involved.

Don and I won't be at the club on the 6th but I guess if you don't end up fighting one of us then you could go ahead with your game on the 6th. So turn 1 is spread over 6th and 13th as it would make no difference either way.
Do you have a faction choice yet so I can add you to the map?

Cheers Anton, I'll go for Normans (maybe English Plantagenet but there's not much difference in army composition) although I might need to borrow some spearmen and Knights from someone, I've got the minis and some bases on order but need to get them painted and based. Good opportunity to practice the speed painting I'm so slow at haha

I really like the normans, great choice. I own 25mm normans that could fill gaps if needed. At a distance they will squeeze in without much notice of scale difference. I have them based for hail caesar at 40mmby40mm bases, four figures for infantry, 2 for cav
I think I have 8 units of cav and 4 of inf. I'll try and remember and bring them along on sunday

Yep, just had another look at army lists and I'll go Normans, heavy bowmen, dismounted and normal Knight match up closer with the minis I have. A lend of the inf and Knights would really be appreciated 😊
