I'm planning to run a game set during the siege of Sidon in 199BC (or thereabouts). Aftere the battle of Panion, Antiochos settled down to besiege , the remaining Ptolemaic holdouts in Coele Syria, the largest of which was Sidon, held by a garrison of Aitolian mercenaries who retreated there after the battle. Historically, the Ptolemies made several relief attempts, mainly using even more Aitolians. This game is therfore a "what if" , to see what might have been if they had some additional troops vailable.
Ptolemaic Forces
The Ptolemaic army has not really recovered from the defat at Panion- Antiochos had very deliberately concentrated his efforts on the Ptolemaic cleruch (settler) phalanx and cavalry during the battle, letting the mercenary Aitolians escape. Therefore the Ptolemaic force is a scratch one. There is a small naval force offshore- the Seleucids now hold most of the Phoenician ports , so they have naval dominance.
Marching north, the Ptolemies run into a small seleucid blocking force, as they emerge from a pass.
Seleucid Forces
The bulk of the army is besieging Sidon, however Antiochos has detached a small force south to hold the Ptolemaic relief attempt in check. The heavy troops are committed to the siege , so it is a scratch force as well. Again, a small naval force has been detached from the siege to cover the sea flank.
